Building Turbo-Charged Countdowns

And...we have LIFTOFF!

Counting down to bring focus/smooth transition or to redirect classes with an even tone of voice is an amazing way to build equity, autonomy and self-regulation in our classrooms. It's working...but what can the next level look like? The sky's the limit!

Instead of us simply saying, "3, 2, 1..." to get the class quiet, our countdown can incorporate movement:

"OK class...everybody decide whether you want to hop, skip, or skate back to your seats in 5...

Make up your mind in 4...

Have you decided? in 3...

Get ready to move in 2...

On your mark! Hop, skip, or skate to your seats in 1...GO!"

Or classroom organization:

Check to make sure your coat is on its hanger in 5...

that your folder is on your desk in 4...

make sure you have a pencil in 3...etc.

You get the idea! I use this structure, which is becoming universal across classrooms, to incorporate deep breathing, appropriate physical contact (high-five, fist bump, or wave goodbye to your partner in 5...). Really, anything we need students to get/do/be in a few moments can be built into a countdown! And, this isn't "more", it's just incorporating what we already need to do or say into, hopefully, a tidier and more engaging container. And...building in CHOICE is always good!

OK, so you've got this great countdown...and everyone is ready. Now what? I can tell you what doesn't work in my classroom: anything beyond quick teacher talk. Another thing that tends to spell trouble? Reminders of negative occurrences in the classroom from earlier in the day/week. Countdowns lead to good things! Think New Years Eve, rockets, the end of championship-winning games. Keep the positive energy flowing, even if (especially if!) what's coming next isn't everyone's favorite activity.

Now, go forth, and strap turbo-boosters to your countdowns in 5!

Have an amazing week in 4!

Thanks so much for reading and following in 3!

Make sure you comment your fave countdown and share this with a friend in 2!

Happy snacking in 1!
