Today, in PD, we talked about how equitable education needs to be a partnership between students and teachers.

I heard all this after I'd been stewing all day about an interaction I'd had earlier in the day with one of my more exuberant classes. I was determined to rein in their energy in tomorrow's class with assigned seats, and the strange notion that if they are forced to sit quietly and listen to directions, class will be more successful going forward...

Ya see?! I've had the day to think about it and how much it doesn't jive in the least with how I approach the classroom. But, see how easily our thinking gets derailed when one or a handful of students do things that are unexpected? Imagine that, humans doing unexpected things???! Ones whose brains are still maturing, at that!

It's clear that I need to know and understand them more, so I'll plan in that direction for tomorrow's class!

Until next time, happy snacking!

Charles :D

Hi, thanks for stopping by!

I'm the founding music teacher at Monarch Academy Glen Burnie, Maryland, USA. I teach Middle School Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Theater, Music Goes Global 6, and Creative Play. I also teach English and Music at the Anne Arundel County Evening and Summer High School eSchool Campuses. The variety of subjects and levels keeps me on my toes mentally and physically, and has brought me in contact with a wide variety of student abilities and needs. I look forward to sharing our teaching journey!

Please keep in touch!
